Brown University Course Aims to Help Men 'Unlearn Toxic Masculinity'

1.1k views

Brown University is now offering a course on “unlearning toxic masculinity,” literally dubbed “Masculinity 101," to "help those socialized as men to unlearn" their naturally violent tendencies.

Or something.

According to the course description from Brown’s own website, the school purports that because of "how men are socialized...Men will often resort to violence to resolve conflict because anger is the only emotion that they have been socialized to express."

“Unfortunately, the way that young men are conditioned to view sex and their need to be dominant and have power over others also contribute to instances of sexual assault and other forms of interpersonal violence on college campuses,” Brown continues.

To help men “unlearn” how to be serial rapists-in-waiting, Brown is offering a once-a-week course aimed at “creating safe spaces for men to unpack all of the things they have learned about masculinity and what it means to be a man.” The course will comprise of "a weekly discussion group for students to unpack and unlearn toxic masculine norms."

“The goal,” Brown states, “is to help those socialized as men to unlearn some of the notions that have led to such profound harm being enacted toward others and toward themselves.”

So there you have it, men. You need to “unlearn” your “toxic masculinity” so you can avoid your natural and otherwise irresistible urge to commit violence against women.
