It’s getting hard to keep track of just how many climate apocalypses we’ve managed to avoid as a species thus far. But if the United Nations is to be believed, our Eminent Doom is swiftly approaching…
…you know, again.
The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres told the BBC at the Pacific Island Forum Leaders Meeting in Tonga this week that “surging seas are coming for us all” if we don’t stop driving our cars and burning fossil fuels to heat our homes and prepare our food and generally survive.
This from the international entity that didn’t include a single Israeli in its homage to victims of terrorism last week. In case you’re wondering how much they really care about loss of human life, here.
To score as many fear mongering points as possible, Guterres pointed to tropical islands he says are at risk of total destruction if man-made climate change continues to fuel rising sea levels (THE HORROR). But, as with so many Doomsday Clocks that have run out in the past and since been scrapped for spare parts, the jury’s out on whether the great global warming boogeyman will, in fact, swallow coastal regions whole if we don’t give up our SUVs and start rollerblading to work, and if climate town criers don't stop gluing themselves to the sidewalk or throwing mashed potatoes on priceless art.

In fact, here’s a fascinating article by the New York Times from just this part June, which states, in part: “Low-lying tropical island nations were expected to be early victims of rising seas. But research tells a surprising story: Many islands are stable. Some have even grown.”
But hey, let’s not let facts get in the way of a good narrative - especially if that narrative is being pushed by the government to steal our money and take control of our lives.
