Leftists never want us to have any fun. Or, apparently, any food except for bugs.

Bringing a nice little storm cloud to rain all over your next summer seafood boil are these scientists, who have now declared that it’s cruel to boil live shellfish like crabs and lobsters because, they say they’ve recently learned, these little bottom-skitterers can feel pain, meaning they don’t appreciate being roasted alive next to your potatoes and corn on the cob.

In fact, the group of zoologists from the University of Gothenburg - which is in Sweden, not that you care - have called for an immediate ban on the practice.

Lead author and PhD student Eleftherios Kasiouras told the DailyMailOnline, “We believe that the boiling crustaceans alive should be banned and other techniques such as electro stunning should be applied the moment that the crustaceans are caught.

“There is more and more evidence emerging, including our research, that decapods [crabs] experience pain so we should treat them as we would treat other animals.”

The researchers said that according to their experiment, which involved hooking the crustaceans up to electrodes and then injecting them with acid, “when a painful stimulus was applied to the tissues of shore crabs, that stimulus was conveyed to the brain. These responses were prolonged and intense.”

In fact, the study claims that crabs and lobsters feel pain in much the same way that humans do, thanks to the makeup of their central nervous system.

Interestingly, while finding out that crabs might feel pain has led to an immediate outcry from the scientific community demanding a ban on live crab and lobster boils, abortion in Sweden is legal for any reason up through the 18th week of pregnancy, well after an unborn baby’s nervous system has developed to be able to feel pain, studies have shown. In some states in the U.S., it is legal to murder an unborn child via poisoning and dismemberment without anesthesia all the way up through the ninth month.

I tell you what: start caring about human children being ripped limb-from-limb for convenience and then maybe we can have a chat about whether it’s ethical to chunk Sebastian in the gumbo pot with the andouille sausage. Until then, pass the Old Bay.
