Look out, El Salvador! You’ve got a world of hurt coming at you from the pissed off politicians of…

…Illinois.

In a move that I’m sure has Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele quaking in his loafers, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has vowed “punitive” measures against the Central American country for refusing to send imprisoned former illegal and accused MS-13 gangbanger Kilmar Abrego García back to the United States per a demand from the U.S. courts.

“The United States Constitution guarantees due process. We are witnessing Donald Trump erode our fundamental Constitutional rights in real time, and we must fight to restore the balance of power,” said Pritzker in his announcement. “The State of Illinois will stand up for the Rule of Law and do everything in our power stop the Trump Administration from ripping apart our most basic rights.”

So how exactly is the - let me check my notes here - midwestern state of Illinois planning to “stand up” for illegal aliens who’ve been sent back to their home country? WGN9 explains…

Pritzker has asked the Illinois State Board of Investment, the State Universities Retirement System, and the Teachers’ Retirement System to review any investments in companies controlled by El Salvador, with the purpose of withholding investments in those companies.

The Governor is also directing the Illinois Department of Central Management Services to identify state contracts with companies that are controlled by El Salvador, with the purpose of stopping them.

And, Pritzker wants the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Office of Trade and Investment to send in an analysis of the scale of trade El Salvador has with Illinois.

Which, apparently, he’s not even entirely sure the state has - but he’s gonna check, just in case. Maybe El Salvador supplies the state office’s coffee, or something. I hope they don't have anything to do with the donuts though, or else Pritzker might have to rethink his strategy.

But I’m sure Bukele will start shipping illegals into the United States in defiance of the Trump administration now that Illinois has threatened to pull their…what was it again? Oh, their Central Management Services contracts and hypothetical, might-not-even exist trade agreements.

Perhaps Pritzker should threaten to sit on El Salvador, instead. That'd probably be more terrifying.
