California Attorney General Rob Bonta is sending out letters to state school systems regarding their handling of “trans” students.

It’s not to say that only biological girls can use women’s restrooms or play on girls’ sports teams. This is California, where adhering to biological gender would make way too much sense. No, Bonta’s missive instead warns schools that “outing” trans kids to their parents is a violation of state law, and that school administrators and staff are instead to hide a kid’s preferred gender identity, pronouns, name, and things like bathroom use from the child’s own parents unless the student gives them express permission to share it.

“Forced disclosure policies violate California’s Equal Protection Clause by expressly discriminating based on gender identity,” Bonta’s legal alert reads, directed at some California school districts that have adopted policies mandating school administrators notify a student’s parents if their child begins going by a different gender or name at school. Such policies, according to Bonta, “intrude upon a core aspect of a student’s privacy and autonomy—their ability to express their core values and identity.”

The notice claims that notifying parents about their own child’s gender “identity” at school puts kids at risk for being abused or even kicked out of their homes, claiming that “one in ten transgender individuals have experienced violence at the hands of an immediate family member” and suggesting that the school cares more about a child than his or her own parents. (Of course, nothing in Bonta's letter references young women who're put at risk by biological males invading their bathrooms, changing areas, locker rooms, or sports teams.)

Bonta’s letter is a not-so-veiled targeting of the Chino Valley School District, which voted last July to adopt a policy mandating schools keep parents aware of their child’s gender expression at school, including letting parents know if their kid has switched names or is using bathrooms or changing facilities that don’t match their biological gender.

Chino Valley School Board President Sonja Shaw blasted Bonta for violating parents’ right to know what’s going on with their own children.

“He’s showing that he wants to be the parent of our children and he’s not doing his real job, which is keeping California safe,” Shaw told local news outlet KCAL. “What is he doing to make them safe at campus by keeping parents out? It absolutely makes no sense.”
