Move over ladies, and try not to trip on your gowns while you're at it - another biological male has walked away with a women’s beauty pageant trophy, this time in Hawaii.
Caia Souza, a 26-year-old man who believes he is a woman, took the top spot at last weekend’s Miss Valley Isle USA pageant in Maui, making him the first “transgender woman” to nab the title.
It’s worth noting that Souza was also the first trans person ever compete in the Miss Maui USA competition, raising the question as to the likelihood of him pulling off a win without identity politics being a factor. But we aren’t allowed to ask that.

Souza says he’s gotten a lot of support on social media for representing “women” like him, claiming that transgenderism is “something that's a part of our culture as Native Hawaiians.”
