At a Trump rally in Madison Square Garden Sunday night, a comedian known for his off-color roasts joked that Puerto Rico was a floating pile of garbage in the ocean. Despite most people understanding that the line was meant as a joke (even Jon Stewart had a laugh over it, and he's far from a Trump fan), Democrats immediately combusted, the media called it “racist” and “so vile,” and the Harris/Walz campaign immediately ran with the bit - which came from a professional comedian, not Trump or his campaign - as an 11th hour pitch to voters.
Fast forward to Tuesday night, when President Joe Biden in turn called millions of Trump supporters “garbage.”
And…cue the crickets.

"The only garbage I see floating out there is [Trump] supporters,” Biden shot back at Trump in a video for a fundraiser Tuesday night, effectively branding half of his own country garbage.

Which begs the question, which carries more weight? A comedian whose claim to fame is lobbing insults in the name of getting a few laughs? Or a president maligning half of his own countrymen “garbage,” without a hint of sarcasm or levity?
I'll leave it for you to decide - but suffice it to say, the media believes only the former is worth getting upset over.
