No one’s ever claimed that AOC is the brightest bulb in the chandelier. But on a scale of kinda-dumb to holy-crap-did-she-say-that idiotic, the New York socialist’s latest claim ranked up there with things like “Sure, the Earth is flat” and “Dang, those Yankees look close to clinching the playoffs.”
Even as the Big Apple suffocates under the enormous and growing weight of the hoard of illegal aliens flooding into the city, AOC’s take on the matter is that the migrants - who, to remind, cut in line, hopped the border, and simply demanded to stay - are here legally.

Except that’s not true. Firstly, the vast majority of migrants who claim asylum don’t actually qualify for it. Under US law, asylees are those who cannot return to their home country due to a well-founded fear of persecution based on "race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or their inclusion in a particular social group."

“Venezuela’s a dumpster fire” might be a true statement, but it didn't make the list. And most people showing up to the border know it - but as long as they can get past the border town and into the country, the outcome of an actual hearing matters little.
In addition, asylum-seekers are required by law to file for asylum in the first safe place they come to after fleeing their home (again, due to persecution, not general crappiness), and are also required to present themselves and request asylum at a port of entry into the United States. Traveling from Guatemala through Mexico on a train and then paying a coyote to ferry you across the river and dump your butt in the desert? Not the same thing.
