A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck central Italy early Wednesday, southeast of the city of Perugia and northeast of the capital, Rome.

The quake struck just after 3:30 a.m. and had several aftershocks.

There are reports of collapsed buildings and people trapped under rubble in Amatrice, a town located near the epicenter of the quake.

“The roads in and out of the town are cut off,” Amatrice mayor Sergio Perozzi told RAI radio. “Half the town is gone.”

“There are people under the rubble… There’s been a landslide and a bridge might collapse,” he said.
