Black Lives Matter has released an official statement regarding the ongoing Jussie Smollett trial into whether the “Empire” actor falsified a police report about a race-based attack he most likely arranged on himself.
And it’s just as stupid as you might imagine.
In the statement, BLM is standing by the embattled celeb despite the mountain of evidence suggesting he arranged for two black men (first described in Smollett’s police report as MAGA hat-wearing, racial slur-throwing white supremacists) to attack him one January 2019 night in Chicago in desperate bid for public attention. Smollett has denied setting the whole thing up himself, while the two alleged “attackers” – Nigerian-born brothers who’d previously worked with Smollett – have testified he paid them to orchestrate the ruse.
But according to BLM, none of that matters because Smollett is black - and if you don't automatically believe him, you're a racist.
“In an abolitionist society, this trial would not be taking place, and our communities would not have to fight and suffer to prove our worth,” Dr. Melina Abdullah, director of BLM Grassroots and co-founder of BLM Los Angeles, said Tuesday in a statement.
“In our commitment to abolition, we can never believe police, especially the Chicago Police Department (CPD) over Jussie Smollett, a Black man who has been courageously present, visible, and vocal in the struggle for Black freedom,” she went on.
Abdullah never does get around to explaining why Smollett should be believed without question simply because he’s a black man, while the two Nigerian men who testified to getting paid to set up the whole thing should be disregarded. But then, ideological consistency has never really been BLM’s strong suit.
As for Smollett, he's currently awaiting a jury's decision on disorderly conduct charges.
