Dozens of illegal aliens, including both adults and children, were found dead in a hot trailer in what appears to have been a massive human smuggling effort in Texas.

San Antonio authorities found at least 46 people dead inside an 18-wheeler parked on the side of the road in the heat Monday, smack in the middle of one of the hottest summers on record. Another 16, including 12 adults and four children, were taken to the hospital. Police had responded to the scene around 6 p.m after a nearby worker called saying he heard a cry for help from inside the truck.

The Texas Tribune adds detail to the horrific - and bizarre - scene:

According to a law enforcement official, it appears people were trying to jump out of the tractor-trailer because some of the deceased were found along several blocks. The tractor-trailer had a refrigeration system, the official said, but it did not appear to be working. Many of the people found inside the vehicle appeared to have been sprinkled with steak seasoning, the official said, in perhaps an attempt to cover up the smell of people as the smugglers were transporting them.

Police said there was no water inside the truck.

Based on identifying clothing and other markers, it appears at least some of the migrants were from Guatemala and Honduras.

The mass casualty event appears to be the deadliest human smuggling effort in recent memory, and mask the latest tragedy in what has become a record-smashing wave of illegal immigration at the Southwest U.S. border under the Biden administration.
