Vice President Joe Biden on Saturday said that the reason why the Democratic Party has been suffering is because today’s leaders are not “aspirational” enough.

“The reason why we’ve been so socially and politically stable is because of an aspirational class,” Biden said at the Miami Book Fair on Saturday. “Some of the elites in my party deserve some of the blame.”

He took the opportunity to criticize President Trump and the Republican party, calling this “one of the most dangerous times in modern history.”

“I think it’s one of the most dangerous times in modern history,” said Biden.

“I think that there have always been voices in our country — and particularly in the 19th and 20th century in Europe — that have always tried to take advantage of pain and change,” he went on, accusing Trump and former White House strategist Steve Bannon among others of promoting “half-baked nationalism” and “phony populism.”

He added that Trump and Republican leaders should be practicing “the power of example” in foreign policy, not acting as the “example of power.”

Biden also questioned whether Trump truly cares about the middle class.

“Do you think he really cares about the kids I grew up with in Scranton, Pennsylvania, as far as their economic well being?” he asked.

At the Miami Book Fair, he promoted his new memoir, “Promise Me, Dad,” about his late son Beau Biden who died in 2015 of brain cancer and his decision not to run for president in 2016.

Biden was mum on rumors of a 2020 presidential run.

In a recent interview, he said he wasn't "closing the door" on the possibility of a White House bid just yet because he's "been around too long."
