During Tuesday’s State of the Union address Joe Biden pleaded for a raise in the U.S. debt ceiling, without having to negotiate budget cuts with Republicans.
Biden claimed that the GOP wants to sunset Medicare and Social Security as part of debt ceiling negotiations – to the response of resounding boos.
Twitter flagged a similar claim from Biden on Sunday, when he said Republicans are threatening to cut Social Security and Medicare amid debt ceiling negotiations. Underneath that message, Twitter inserted a reader context note clarifying that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., "said ahead of a meeting with President Biden this week that cuts to Medicare and Social Security are off the table in talks around raising the debt limit."
