Vermont Senator and 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders “is resting up” after undergoing a surprise procedure.

A senior advisor to Sanders, Jeff Weaver, said in a statement that “Sanders experienced some chest discomfort” during a campaign event Tuesday evening and that “testing” showed he had “blockage in one artery and two stents were successfully inserted.”

The Wednesday statement reads, "During a campaign event yesterday evening, Sen. Sanders experienced some chest discomfort. Following medical evaluation and testing he was found to have a blockage in one artery and two stents were successfully inserted.”

"Sen. Sanders is conversing and in good spirits,” Weaver continues. “He will be resting up over the next few days. We are canceling his events and appearances until further notice, and we will continue to provide appropriate updates."

Sanders, 78, is the oldest 2020 Democratic contender, followed by former Vice President Joe Biden, 76, and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, 70.

Sanders is at a hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he received treatment following a campaign event at the Las Vegas shooting memorial. This story is developing.
