Following the lead of other colleges and universities in recent months, the University of South Alabama has just shut down its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) office.
The move was announced by university President Josiah Robins Bonner Jr., explained in a statement that the decision was made to bring the school’s policies into compliance with new state law, adding, “While the new law alters our organizational structure and approach to some programming, it does not diminish our commitment to academic freedom or to supporting a culture of belonging and respect.”
Since the statement was released, the school’s DEI website has also been taken down.
This is all because of Alabama’s recent law S.B. 129, signed on March 20 and effective October 1, which bans “divisive concepts” that teach that “any race, color, religion, sex, ethnicity, or national origin is inherently superior or inferior.”
Auburn University also announced last month that it would eliminate its DEI office by Aug. 15 and relocate DEI officials into different departments.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey explained her reasoning for signing the bill, stating back in March, “My Administration has and will continue to value Alabama’s rich diversity, however, I refuse to allow a few bad actors on college campuses – or wherever else for that matter – to go under the acronym of DEI, using taxpayer funds, to push their liberal political movement counter to what the majority of Alabamians believe.”
“We have already taken action to prevent this in our K-12 classrooms, and I am pleased to sign SB129 to protect our college campuses,” she went on. “Supporting academic freedom, embracing diversity of cultures and backgrounds and treating people fairly are all key components of what we believe in Alabama, and I am more than confident that will continue.”
With any luck, more colleges and universities will take the cue and eliminate ridiculous - and racist - DEI programs.
