Biden’s declining health has been a point of concern for many Americans in the upcoming election. Among them is Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, who has been very outspoken about Biden’s questionable abilities as a leader due to the president's apparent lack of mental acuteness, as portrayed in the recent presidential debate with Donald Trump.

Now, Graham is calling for all the candidates - and anyone in the presidential line of succession - to take a regular cognitive exam as a condition of holding office.

Most Democrats are worried about Biden winning the election. I’m worried about Biden being the commander in chief for the next four months,” Graham said.

“On October the 7th, Israel’s attacked by Hamas. On October the 8th, President Biden gives an interview to the special counsel, where they determined him to be a nice man with a bad memory and you couldn’t convince a jury he did anything wrong,” Graham pointed out, adding he’s concerned about the president's ability to meet with NATO leaders during a scheduled summit next week.

“[What] I would like to see is President Biden take a cognitive test. I think everybody going forward in the line of succession should have a neurological exam on a regular basis,” Graham continued, suggesting that anyone who runs for president or falls in the line of succession - including vice presidents and House speakers, among others - should have to prove by rule that they’re mentally fit for the job. The rule would also apply to Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump.

“We need to make sure that the people who are going to be in the line of succession are capable of being commander in chief under dire circumstances,” Graham said.

This call for a cognitive exam is only fair. If the American people are being asked to vote for individuals to lead this country, they have the right to know if the candidate they’re supporting has the mental capacity to run an entire country.

In all honesty, it’s a tragedy that the bar of quality is set so low for our leaders that we have to ask for basic cognitive testing. Being mentally sound is the bare minimum, and every candidate should adhere to this test.
