In a recent interview with BBC’s Andrew Marr, China’s ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming was confronted with drone footage of Uighur Muslims being pushed into trains.

“Let’s look at some very disturbing drone footage that has been widely shared around the world,” Marr began, showing a video of what appears to be Uighur Muslims tied up and blindfolded being herded into trains.

Xiaoming deflected the question by going on a tangent on the alleged beauty of the area of Northern China in question. Marr responded with, “Ambassador, that is not beautiful coverage, however, is it?”

Marr continued to press the ambassador, “Can I ask you why people are kneeling, blindfolded, and shaven, and being led to trains in modern China? What is going on?”

“I do not know where you get this videotape. Sometimes you have a transfer of prisons and prisoners, in any county,” the ambassador said, trying to downplay the footage as just a possible prisoner transfer

“[The video] has been authenticated by Western intelligence agencies and by Australian experts who say these are Uighur people being pushed onto trains and taken off,” Marr explained.

Xiaoming proceeded to slam Western intelligence.

“Let me tell you this, the so-called Western intelligence making these false accusations against China. You know how much population Xinjiang has? Forty years ago it was five million, now it is 11 million people and people say we have ethnic cleansing, but the population has doubled in 40 years.”

“According to your own local government statistics, the population growth in Uighur jurisdictions in that area has fallen by 84 percent between 2015 and 2018,” Marr responded.

The ambassador claimed Marr’s statistics were incorrect, said that the Uighur population has doubled. Xiaoming also said that there has been no restriction of the population or forced-abortions.

According to a report from the Associated Press, the Chinese government has taken several measures to slash birth rates among Uighurs to curb its Muslim population. Some of the measures include IUDs, abortion, and even sterilization.
