A baby is recovering in a New York state hospital after she spent three days outside in a garbage bag.

According to the Elmira Police Department, residents heard a "suspicious noise" from their neighbor's trash and went over to investigate. Kayla Seals claimed she thought the noise was an animal at first, but was horrified at what she actually found.

"I ran up and I see the little legs were dangling out the bag, so I said, 'You guys, it's a baby.'" Seals then tore open the bag to find a 8-month-old baby girl.

"I picked her up. I took her in the bathroom. I mean, she was hardly breathing, honey. Her eyes weren't even open," Seals recalled.

"She wasn't breathing, but she opened her mouth for me and I dropped some water in there and she started gasping for air after I did that. Her eyes weren't opening so I cleaned her eyes, so her eyes would open up to me and I just spoke to her 'come on baby, come on baby, come on sweetness,''' Seals said.

Seargent William Solt of the Elmira Police Department had kind words for the Seals family, telling WENY, "Obviously, it's very heroic on their part to render aid, immediately get inside, as you would expect any decent human being to do. Washed up the baby as quickly as they could and did whatever they could until first responders arrived. They are truly heroes in this incident."

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and transported the child to the hospital where she was listed in "stable condition" and is still being evaluated.

Law enforcement's investigation led them to the infant's mother, 17-year-old Hariette Hoyt, who was later charged with attempted murder in the second degree, which is a class B felony. Hoyt has since been arraigned and remains in the Chemung County Jail.
