The ATF Doesn't Even Have a Permanent Director

One thing that President Obama neglected to do when he announced his executive orders regarding gun control Tuesday was nominate someone to be in charge of actually enforcing them.

The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), the agency tasked with enforcing many of the broad proposals that the president outlined in his speech, doesn't actually have a boss. In fact, it hasn't had any official director since B. Todd Jones stepped down from the post in March of last year.

Jones was replaced by acting director Brandon Thomas, but he was never awarded the official post as head of the agency. Some have speculated that this was an intentional move by the administration to avoid a confirmation hearing that would have focused on the "Fast and Furious" scandal.

So while The White House has stated that many of the new rules proposed for expanding background checks will be overseen by the ATF, the agency itself is not officially being run by anyone.

While this may be good enough for government work, it is interesting that an administration that has fought tooth and nail to impose new gun restrictions on the American public is either too incompetent or too cowardly to find someone to officially oversee the implementation of these new restrictions.
