UPDATE: KTLA reports the shooter has been contained, although a lockdown is still in place for a nearby middle school.

ORIGINAL STORY: A shooting took place near a polling station Tuesday afternoon in Azusa, Calif., about 30 minutes from Los Angeles.

Authorities say the situation started around 2 p.m. (around 5 p.m. EST).

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune:

One person was killed and at least three others were wounded Tuesday in an active shooting near a polling place in Azusa.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Capt. Jeff Scroggin said police were dealing with at least one suspect who was heavily armed.

Few details were released about the shooting, which occurred sometime after 2 p.m. in a residential neighborhood in the area of Fourth Street and Orange Avenue, said Officer Jerry Willison of the Azusa Police Department.

According to the report, "Willison declined to provide the location of the shooting for the safety of the officers and the victims."

KTLA reports those inside the polling place at the time said they heard shots before the voting station was locked down.

One male voter says he was inside when he heard a bunch of shots ring out and people from outside starting to run in before officials locked the doors.

He told CNN a “massive shooting is happening and the police have told us to stay indoors. We are currently on locked down.”

A female voter told CNN she heard the shots ring out.

“At first, I thought it was construction but people came running into the room saying they see a guy with a bulletproof vest and a white shirt. As of right now, they just have us in the voting room and are trying to keep us calm.”

The female voter said officials are not allowing anyone to leave the building but people are still allowed to vote while they wait. She said officials are not announcing updates inside in order to not scare the kids.

A group of kids were reportedly inside the polling place when the incident occurred.

CNN reports the polling station is still on lockdown.

We'll update this story more as the situation develops.
