ACLU Already Threatening Trump Administration With 'Full Firepower' Legal Action

It seems some organizations are going right back to politics-as-usual.

ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero released a statement regarding Trump’s election win, threatening the president-elect with the “full firepower of the ACLU at every step” if Trump tries to turn some of his campaign promises into policy.

It hasn’t even been 48 hours since Trump was declared the winner of the election and he's already getting legal threats.

“President-elect Trump, as you assume the nation’s highest office, we urge you to reconsider and change course on certain campaign promises you have made,” the statement begins, listing many issues Trump talked about during his campaign, such as immigration and abortion.

“These proposals are not simply un-American and wrong-headed, they are unlawful and unconstitutional,” the statement continues, arguing some proposals and talking points are violations of various amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

Then the threat:

“If you do not reverse course and instead endeavor to make these campaign promises a reality, you will have to contend with the full firepower of the ACLU at every step. Our staff of litigators and activists in every state, thousands of volunteers, and millions of card-carrying supporters are ready to fight against any encroachment on our cherished freedoms and rights.”

The statement was featured on the front page of the ACLU website, which showcased a picture of Trump and the words, “See you in court” as well as a button asking for donations (pictured above).

It’s quite amazing, really, seeing that it hasn’t even been two days since Trump was declared the president-elect, and yet we are already seeing outside groups threatening to bring policies that don’t actually exist yet to court.

The good news, however, is that this seems to be an outlier in the quest to bring unity to a country after bitter campaign cycle. For example, President Obama and President-elect Trump met in the Oval Office on Thursday for their first-ever meeting, one that Obama called “excellent."

Trump, for his part, said that he looked forward to dealing with Obama in the future and asking for council, and even calling Obama a good man.
