7 Fascinating Facts About Rand Paul's Life

Rand Paul announced that he will be running for President of the United States today.

Here are seven facts about Rand Paul’s life you might not know. 

 

1. He does not have an undergraduate degree

Paul never graduated college with an ungraduate degree, but he was accepted to Duke University, one of the best medical schools in the United States, based on his strong MCAT exam score.

2. Paul is not the only doctor in the family

Rand Paul is an ophthalmologist, but he is not the only doctor in his family. Paul’s father, Ron Paul, and younger brother, Robert Paul, are also both doctors. Ron Paul earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from Duke University’s School of Medicine and his younger brother is a family-practice physician in Texas.

3. He gives back to people

When Paul has a Senate recess, he is usually in the operating room and many times will perform pro-bono surgeries for patients who do not have insurance. He has also performed free eye surgeries for children in developing countries through the Children of the Americas program.

4. Ted Cruz was one of his wife’s clients

Kelley Paul worked at a political consulting firm up until 2014. One of her clients was Texas Sen. Ted Cruz who has announced he is running for President.

5. He became well-known for his drone filibuster

Paul became pretty well-known after his almost 13 hour filibuster on the Senate floor. This was in response to President Obama’s policies on drones, along with the nomination of John Brennan as the director of the CIA. 

 

 

 

6. Paul has been affiliated with several different religions

Paul was baptized as an Episcopalian. He attended Baylor University, which is a Baptist school. He now attends a Presbyterian church. 

In 2012, he detailed his personal struggle with religion, saying, “My faith has never been easy for me, never been easy to talk about and never been without obstacles. I do not and cannot wear my religion on my sleeve. I am a Christian but not always a good one. I’m not completely free of doubts. I struggle to understand man’s inhumanity to man. I struggle to understand the horrible tragedies that war inflicts on our young men and women.”

7. He will not be the first Paul to run for President

Rand Paul volunteered for his father’s presidential campaign in 1988. His father ran two more times after that in 2008 and 2012. Rand helped in his father's 2008 election by campaigning door-to-door in New Hampshire.
