1st Lady Refuses to Say ‘Trump’ in Two Campaign Speeches

Craig Bannister | October 5, 2016

First Lady Michelle Obama couldn’t bring herself to actually speak the words “Donald Trump” in two separate Hillary for America campaign speeches in North Carolina Tuesday.

In a 3,700-word speech at the Charlotte Convention Center, and later that day in a 4,000-word speech at North Carolina State University, Mrs. Obama could only bear to refer to Donald Trump as “candidate” (six times) or “opponent” (four times):

“A Candidate”:

  1. “A candidate traffics in prejudice, fear and lies on the campaign trail,
  2. “A candidate mocks people with disabilities or people who are sick,
  3. “A candidate implies that our veterans who have served our country so bravely are somehow weak because they’re dealing with the wounds of war,
  4. “A candidate regularly demeans and humiliates women, making cruel and insulting comments about our bodies, criticizing how we look and how we act,
  5. “That’s who that candidate really is,”
  6. “A candidate is not going to suddenly change once they’re in office.”

“Opponent”:

  1. “But you could also swing an entire precinct for Hillary's opponent with a protest vote or by staying home out of frustration,”
  2. “Either Hillary Clinton or her opponent will be President this year,”
  3. “And if you vote for someone other than Hillary or if you don't vote at all, then you'll be helping to elect Hillary's opponent,”
  4. “So the question is, do you want Hillary Clinton to be your President or do you want her opponent to be your President?”
