Sen. Bernie Sanders is beloved by many in the liberal press, which is why most are unlikely to point the hypocrisy of his recent rant against America.
In a March 18 tweet, the former Democratic presidential candidate scolded America as a nation that “worships wealth” instead of “caring for the poor.” The tweet added “I don't think that is the nation we should be living in.”
The liberal media have praised Sanders, a self-proclaimed socialist, as an everyday average citizen concerned with income inequality. Tierney McAfee and Sandra Sobieraj Westfall of People.com called Sanders as a “down-to-earth Democratic candidate” who does his own laundry. CNN politics reporter Gregory Krieg even touted the #Sandersonaplane Twitter hashtag that praised the Senator for frequently flying coach.
On March. 20, far left economic activist Les Leopold wrote for Salon.com that Sanders is the “most popular politician in the United States” because his message about “runaway inequality hits home.”
But Sanders isn’t one of the people suffering from income inequality. Fortune.com reported in 2016 that Sanders was in the “Top 4% of Earners,” and has a “six-figure income.” He also owns three different houses. Time reporter Kerri Anne Renzulli said Sanders was “not exactly a man of modest means” and called him “a de facto millionaire.”
Though he often rants about the rich needing to pay their fair share, National Review’s Jim Geraghty said Sanders only paid a 13.5 percent tax rate in 2014 — which amounted to a total of $27,653. Yet on Oct. 2, 2016, Sanders told CNN reporter Jake Tapper that “people are angry” because Donald Trump used the tax code to his advantage to avoid paying taxes in the 1990’s. Recent reports showed that, at least in 2005, Trump paid a much higher percentage on his taxes.
