The Department of Justice used a firm that works for President Obama's reelection campaign to provide research on whether Texas's Voter ID Law would prejudice the rights of minorities in Texas.

This firm, called Catalist, serves clients such as the Democratic House and Senate Campaign Committees, Emily's List, Planned Parenthood, and Obama For America. The firm's mission is as follows: "to provide progressive organizations with the data and services needed to better identify, understand, and communicate with the people they need to persuade and mobilize."

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) wants Attorney General Holder to explain why he chose such an openly partisan firm to provide data for aN purportedly non-partisan executive branch agency.
