Republicans in the House of Representatives have long made their irritation with Attorney General Eric Holder apparent and now they have made life more difficult for the Justice Department voting on an array of spending limitations including aims that handicap the DOJ from halting voter identification laws.
“We are at battle with our own Justice Department,” Rep. Schweikert (R- AZ) declared in a speech at the House floor regarding his amendment to make it unlawful for funds from the appropriations bill to be used by the federal government to sue states over their voter ID laws. He explained that Texas and other states are being sued by the Justice Department over voter ID laws and the “the American people are tired” of it.
HR 5326 prohibits funds from being used by the Department of Justice to bring any action against any State for implementation of a State law requiring voter identification, which Holder vowed to block because he believes minorities would be disproportionately burdened by having to show photo identification at the polls.
In a vote harldy mentioned by the mainstream media, the amendment to the appropriations bill passed 232 to 190, reflecting the ongoing frustration Republicans, and apparently some Democrats, have with Attorney General Eric Holder. Suprisingly, 142 House Democrats favored an amendment that in essence prevents the Obama Department of Justice from suing states over voter identification laws.
