There was a lot of media noise yesterday concerning White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci's colorful interview with The New Yorker and the failed Senate Obamacare bill. Unfortunately, that noise drowned out a very positive news story.
Yesterday, President Trump awarded the Medal of Valor to five law enforcement officers who responded to the shooting at the Republican congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia in June. Two Capitol Police officers and three Alexandria Police officers received the medal, which is the highest award given to a public safety officer.
Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey and Officers Nicole Battaglia, Alexander Jensen, and Kevin Jobe all received the Medal of Valor from the president in the East Room of the White House. President Trump's opening remarks highlighted the bravery of these five individuals: "The assault on June 14 reminded us that evil exists in this world but it also reminded us that heroes walk in our midst."
"We praise America's law enforcement and I have been praising them for a long time. They are unbelievable people. For being tough. For doing the tough jobs, the dangerous jobs and, sometimes, thankless jobs with tremendous integrity, devotion, and courage."
On June 14, a shooter opened fire on a group of congressmen practicing for the Congressional Baseball Game for Charity on a field in Alexandria, Virginia. The shooting left House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and a congressional staffer severely wounded, along with Special Agents Christopher Bailey and Crystal Griner. However, Bailey still managed to throw the honorary first pitch at the game the next day, even while on crutches.
Sen. Rand Paul, who was at the field in Alexandria that fateful day, said immediately afterward that the Capitol Police had prevented a "massacre."
“Everybody probably would have died except for the fact that the Capitol Hill police were there," Paul told press.
Scalise, who was just released from the hospital this week, said in a statement, "I cannot think of a group of individuals more deserving of this award."
