A Kansas makeup artist was reportedly disqualified after winning a Kat Von D-sponsored makeup contest after Kat Von D discovered the artist supports President Trump.

The Wichita Eagle reports local makeup artist Gypsy Freeman won a contest held by Kat Von D Beauty. After Kat Von D discovered Freeman’s past support for Trump, however, she allegedly messaged Freeman to tell her she was disqualified.

According to the Wichita Eagle, Freeman entered into the “Saint + Sinner Contest” that would allow for her and a friend to be flown to Los Angeles to be part of the launch party for Kat Von D’s new makeup line. The winner would also win a prize package that is estimated at $2,100.

Although all references to the contest have reportedly since been removed from the Kat Von D Instagram page, the Kat Von D website still references the contest, the rules for entry, and the prizes. Nowhere does it mention anything about political ideology.

However, according to screenshots provided by Freeman, after she won the contest, Kat Von D messaged her personally to discuss her support for Trump. After the election, Freeman had posted a photo that had the Trump logo and read, “Make America Great Again!”

The messages claim Kat Von D had “drawn a personal line in the sand between myself and anyone who supports that man.”

It continued through multiple messages:

My launch party [and my brand] celebrates many things that Trump is against.

And I just need you to know that I personally have a hard time with inviting anyone who would support such an anti-feminist, anti-homosexual/LGBT, anti-immigrant, and anti-climate change fascist such as Trump.

The screenshots show Freeman responded, “I won’t be upset with you if you can’t have us there for these reasons, and I wish you the best. We would love to be there, of course, but I sincerely do understand if you decide to replace us with someone who supports the candidate you support.”

Kat Von D replied to Freeman by comparing Trump to Hitler:

It’s not about inviting people based on their political stance – it’s just extremely difficult (borderline impossible) for me to be friends with or associate with anyone who would support a man who goes against everything I stand for. I would feel the same way towards people who supported Hitler, or any other fascist.

According to the Wichita Eagle, the photographer who took the photo of Freeman, Jenn Bischof, was still invited to attend the event. Photos reportedly show her with Kat Von D.

“I just think it’s really unfortunate that they — a major brand that’s sold in places like Sephora — are basing their contest winnings, which was never in the rules, off of someone finding a post back from November of me posting a Trump campaign sign,” Freeman said.

“It’s definitely bigotry – it’s everything that they’re calling us, they’re doing,” she said. “It’s a huge case of hypocrisy,” she told the Wichita Eagle.

Kendo Holdings, the parent company of Kat Von D Beauty, has not returned the Wichita Eagle’s request for comment.
