On Thursday, reports confirmed a van plowed into a group of pedestrians in Barcelona, Spain, killing two and injuring dozens.

A white van mowed down people on Las Ramblas, the central thoroughfare through the city that is heavy with tourists, restaurants and shops.

Local police initially described the incident as a "massive crash" and closed nearby train and metro stations.

"All of a sudden I heard a crashing noise, and the whole street just started to run and screaming," an eyewitness said. Some nearby have tweeted out images of the scene:

According to Sky News, as of 9 a.m. EST, two armed men had taken control of a kosher restaurant, taking those inside hostage.

A spokesperson for the Spanish state of Catalan has said this is "most likely" a terrorist attack. The situation is still developing.
