Cheryl Saban, wife of Univision owner Haim Saban, was nominated as U.S. representative to the United Nations by the Obama administration- as reported two weeks ago but slipped under the radar.

POLITICO wrote on September 20, 2012 of the move:

Saban — a mega-donor who was at one time the top giver to the Democratic Party — has been intensely courted by the Obama campaign to try to level the playing field between the Democrats and big-money outside groups.

Later, as to why the appointment was made according to administration officials:

Administration officials point to Cheryl Saban's qualifications for the position, including nonprofit work with 50 Ways to Save Our Children, CARE USA, Children’s Network International, Mercy Corps, and Plan USA — as well as a long record of philanthropy and public advocacy.

The Miami Herald wrote on September 26, 2012:

According to another blog in Spanish of Yahoo, the appointment of Cheryl Saban to the diplomatic post was made last Wednesday, the day before Obama appeared at a forum at the University of Miami hosted by Univision.

Haim Saban, a billionaire businessman, took control of Univision in 2006 topping a bid made by media conglomerate Televisa of Mexico.

Univision, the Spanish language television network, has been doing a special investigation into the Fast and Furious scandal. Recently, Univision unearthed major facts dealing with the botched gun-running operation which resulted in numerous deaths, including that of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, making the timing of this appointment interesting.
