During Tuesday’s White House press briefing, spokesman Sean Spicer addressed the new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) guidelines for dealing with illegal immigration.

Spicer said that the two memos issued on Monday involve "explicit guidance" to DHS staff on how to carry out the executive orders signed by President Trump on Jan. 25 — the first involving border security and immigration enforcement and the second involving interior enforcement of immigration laws and enhancing public safety.

"Perhaps most critically, the President is empowering DHS to carry out the immigration laws currently on the books," said Spicer.

He offered a brief summary of the memos, including provisions to hire more Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and officers, to hire additional legal staff to support their operations, to begin securing the U.S.-Mexico border, and to deport illegal immigrants “swiftly and humanely” in accordance with the law.

The White House is currently in the process of rewriting President Trump’s executive order on immigration which prohibits travel to the U.S. from seven countries known to have connections to terrorism.

The rewritten executive order is expected to be revealed this week and implemented in the weeks ahead.
