Sometimes, enough is enough.
A pilot aboard a United Airlines flight headed from San Francisco, Calif. to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico wasn’t about to allow the current divide in the United States following Donald Trump’s presidential election victory to spill onto his plane.
According to Jon Bauer, the uploader of the YouTube video of the pilot’s address to the passengers, this was what prompted the pilot’s words:
On my friend's @wirelessness flight from SFO to Mexico, some kinda scuffle broke out where an individual with a "plaid shirt and a camo cap" said something racist (about being "glad to have kept his guns") to an African American lady, and she began to cry and freak out. They separated the two of them, and then the Captain of the flight got on the PA and made this announcement.
If an award were given out to a person that perfectly diffused a crumbling situation, this pilot would receive such an award. The pilot gave the passengers a “time-out,” and it was epic!
During the video, the pilot said, “If you support him [Trump], that’s great. If you don’t, I understand.”
The pilot continued to speak calmly and basically tell people not to ruin their trip to a traditional vacation destination.
“Nobody wants to argue,” the pilot continued. “Nobody’s going to change their minds by arguing, and let’s keep our opinions to ourselves on this particular matter at this particular time.”
The pilot’s words were delivered with surgical precision, and it was clear by the end of his speech that he wasn’t going to put up with anymore of this type of behavior.
“If there’s anybody that has a problem with this, that needs to vent or rant or rave, there’s another flight tomorrow,” the pilot said as he was nearing his final thoughts on the situation.
If there’s anything that can be learned from this, it is that we as a people need to learn how to agree to disagree again. Quit your protesting. Quit your crying. Even if it is a little fun to watch people melt down after the results of this election, quit your gloating.
Let’s just be Americans. United we stand. Divided we fall.
