A study conducted by the Institute of Labor Economics discovered that since Roe v. Wade was overturned on June 24, 2022, an estimated 32,000 additional births per year occurred. Though this is an incredible result of abortion bans limiting the number of babies being killed, many online were not pleased.
“As of November 1, 2023, 14 states are enforcing bans on abortion in nearly all circumstances, and 23 percent of U.S. women of reproductive age have experienced an increase in driving distance to the nearest abortion facility, from an average of 43 miles one-way before Dobbs to 330 miles at present,” the report indicated.
The researchers used information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2005 to 2023 which showed birth data by age and race. Researchers compared the data to trends before the Dobbs decision to trends after.
The same report wrote the following:
Our primary analysis indicates that in the first six months of 2023, births rose by an average 2.3 percent in states enforcing total abortion bans compared to a control group of states where abortion rights remained protected, amounting to approximately 32,000 additional annual births resulting from abortion bans.
While even the study framed this as a bad thing, insisting that abortion “rights” are something to be “protected,” pro-life individuals praised the news.
Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life, told The New York Times that this was a “triumph that pro-life policies result in lives saved,” yet in the same article, The New York Times referred to women killing their kids as a way of “ending their pregnancies” and categorized abortions as as a part of “reproductive health.”

Lila Rose, president of Live Action said the news was “absolutely amazing,” on her Twitter and added, “32,000 boys and girls were saved, protected from being killed by abortion, because of the fall of Roe and the life-saving laws that went into effect. Every one of these children is a miracle. This is why we do this work.”
Bloomberg business still insisted that abortion is a “constitutional right” when it Tweeted the company’s take on the study.
Similarly, one user called the news “32,000 forced births.”
Ultimately, it’s great news that an estimated 32,000 babies per year, who would have likely been aborted were saved as a result of Roe’s overturn. Now the prayer is that those who weren’t saved rest in peace, that more post-birth resources for moms and babies become readily available and that the culture wars stop fighting and recognize that saved lives is a win.
