On Halloween, one Ohio high school student was suspended for attempting to cut an apple in class.  Not because the teacher was anti-apple, but because the student was going to use a knife to slice it. (As opposed to a spoon, I suppose. Or his hands.)

Da’von Shaw had planned out a demonstration for his 10th grade class on how to make a healthy breakfast—I learned that when I was 6—but I guess some kids are slow learners.

“When I took out the knife, the teacher then told me that I couldn't use it, so I didn't hesitate I just gave it to her,” said Da'von

Later on that day, Shaw was informed that he had been suspended for five days for bringing a “weapon” to school.

The School District's Superintendent, Sherman Micsak, refused to go on camera to talk about the incident but insisted that the punishment fit the crime. Privately he told a local Cleveland reporter that the punishment for slicing an apple could have been a year’s suspension.  But they decided against that.

Wow!  What a guy!

“I put in the slogan an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” Da’von explained when talking about his demonstration that nearly landed him in a situation that would have caused him to graduate a year late.

He may be right.  Apples are a healthy alternative to other sugary breakfast foods.  But the dangers posed to a child’s education by apple slicing and consumption in the Bedford County School District clearly isn’t worth the risks.

So pass the Lucky Charms!  Sure you’ll get diabetes, but you can’t kill anyone with a spoon.

I mean, Maybe you can.  I haven’t tried.
