"Authorities are investigating after a shooting at Savannah State University killed a student and prompted a lockdown at the Georgia school," reports The Associated Press.

A junior at SSU, Christopher Starks, 22, was shot during an altercation at the school's student center Thursday night, university officials wrote in a statement. He was transported to a local hospital where he died from gunshot wounds.

SSU spokeswoman Loretta Hayward told AP that the campus lockdown was lifted around midnight. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the ongoing investigation.

There are no arrests at this time.

The SSU Student Government Association is holding a vigil for Starks on Friday at noon.
