Famed American songwriter and musician Stevie Wonder shocked his audience with his thoughts about Black Lives Matter and Black-on-Black violence at a peace conference last Saturday.
The conference, which was hosted in North Minneapolis, was attended by several hundred people, and focused on urban violence.
In addition to Wonder, civil rights leader Benjamin Chavis also spoke at the event, according to Billboard.com.
During the conference, Wonder weight with his take -- and it definitely wasn't P.C.:
“It is in your hands to stop all the killing and all the shooting wherever it might be. Because you cannot say black lives matter and then kill yourselves. Because you know we’ve mattered long before it was said, but the way we show that we matter, the way that we show all the various people of color matter, is by loving each other and doing something about it. Not just talking about it, not just waiting to see the media and press come when there’s a horrible thing."
Wonder's comments were met with cheers from the crowd.
The superstar continued, “The first thing you must do is stop believing the fallacy of you not being important, because it is completely unacceptable for one to hate themselves so much that anyone that looks like you, you want to kill.”
Wonder’s speech adds to the growing trend of African Americans casting doubts on the narratives developed by BLM and other race-based movements. Although his statements will definitely be controversial to those who believe the problem lies only with police departments and racism, being accountable for your own community is something all Americans should be able to agree with.
