On June 2 students at Marshall Simonds Middle School in Burlington, MA organized a protest against the school’s approved “Spirit Day” for pride month.

According to the Daily Wire students wore red, white and blue clothing and chanted “U.S.A are my pronouns” while ripping down pride banners and stickers throughout the school.

Burlington Equity Coalition co-Chair Nancy Bonassera called the protest, “display of intolerance and homophobia” during a town meeting while urging the town's leadership to “take an active stand against hate under the guise of ‘free expression’”.

Burlington Public Schools Superintendent sent a letter to parents on June 4 calling the students actions as a case “homophobia.”

Superintendent Eric Conti said in the letter “I recognize that discussions and celebrations of individual identity are complex and impacted by individual values, religions, and cultural norms, the result of which may include expressions of racism, anti-religious hate, ableism, and in this case homophobia.”

Some parents sympathized with the students, feeling that it was offensive for the school to urge students to wear pride themed clothing, according to the Daily Wire.

“Some of the kids threw the stickers on the ground. But I can only speak for my daughter, she just didn’t want to wear that to school. It’s not that she wanted to hurt anybody’s feelings,” parent Christine Steiner told WCVB.

This instance comes after a recent increase in public backlash against schools and corporations pushing pride propaganda.
