President Barack Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe paid a historic visit to Pearl Harbor on Tuesday, more than 75 years after Japan attacked the U.S. naval base.

President Obama announced on Dec. 7 – the 75th anniversary of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor – his plans to visit the USS Arizona Memorial with Prime Minister Abe, describing the gesture “as a tribute to the power of reconciliation” between the two countries.

On Tuesday, Abe became the first sitting Japanese leader to visit the site of the attack in 1941 that killed over 2,000 Americans and brought the U.S. into World War II.
