Poll: Majority of Americans Believe Unborn Are People and Killing Them Should Be Illegal

The vast majority of Americans (66%) think "fetuses in the womb" are people, and only 16% think they’re not people, according to a new YouGov poll. The majority of Americans (56%) also believe that abortion should not be legal on request, and 76% think that if a pregnant woman is violently attacked and her unborn baby is killed, the attacker should be charged with murder.

The study, which polled 1,000 people, was commissioned after no charges were filed in last month’s horrific, violent attack on a pregnant mother in Longmont, Colo.

53% of Whites and 52% of Blacks believe that life begins at conception. Surprisingly, only 42% of Hispanics believe life begins at conception, with 26 percent believing it’s if the baby can live outside the womb and 19% saying it’s when the child is born.

As HotAir points out:

Overall, late term abortion has never been popular, which is why it’s all the more frustrating that House Republicans tripped up badly in January when they tried to pass a Federal law banning abortions after 20 weeks into a pregnancy. It’s a popular position. More women support 20-week abortion ban laws than men. Around 60 percent of American women support such measures.

While the majority of Americans believe that unborn in the womb are people, and this was true in every demographic, Democrats and people who make over $80,000 are least likely to think that (both 56%.)
