It was one of the few quiet moments in Congress on Tuesday -- if not the only.

Speaking before a congressional panel Tuesday, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards asserted that no baby has ever been born alive after a botched abortion attempt at a Planned Parenthood clinic.

During a hearing before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Richards had an interesting exchange with Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.), who questioned her on what type of medical care Planned Parenthood provides to a child who is born alive during an abortion. What Richards said next stunned DeSantis into momentary silence.

From the hearing:

DeSantis: Ms. Richards, if a child survives an abortion attempt, should it be given nourishment and medical care?

Richards: I’ve never heard of such a circumstance happening.

DeSantis: Really?

Richards: Yes. I mean, I certainly…I can say that at Planned Parenthood, I am not aware of a circumstance where …we don’t provide abortions after viability. So…but it certainly, in my experience at Planned Parenthood, we haven’t ever had that kind of circumstance.

DeSantis: But you would say that medical care would be in order at that point? Forget Planned Parenthood, just generally?

Richards: Well I’d say, again, I want to be responsible for Planned Parenthood and what we do there, and certainly in that situation in, which again has never occurred that I know of, a baby born…that baby should as the mother should, get appropriate medical care from the physician. And would.

Just a few weeks ago, abortion survivor Giana Jessen testified before the House Judiciary Committee about her own harrowing birth day, when she was born alive after a botched saline abortion attempt after her 19-year-old mother was advised to terminate her pregnancy at a Planned Parenthood clinic. The abortion procedure, performed at seven and a half months, left Jessen with cerebral palsy from oxygen depravation.
