Officer Rappels Down Ravine to Save 10-Week-Old Puppy

With all of the horrible things happening in the world this week, it is always pleasant to find a story that has a happy ending. Earlier this week, a ten-week-old stray German Shepherd puppy was saved by San Diego County’s Department of Animal Services after the puppy stumbled into a 200 foot ravine about 65 miles northeast of downtown San Diego.

Luckily, the puppy’s fall was stopped by a large bush after about 100 feet. If the bush had not been there, the puppy would have most likely not survived the rest of the fall.

Officer Denise Gove was called to the scene by passersby after they heard the puppy crying while they were walking by the edge of the ravine. When they looked over the edge, they saw the hapless pooch clinging to the bush.

It is not known how long the puppy was trapped in the rocky ravine.

Lt. Loren Bunnell, who took the dispatch call, said, “I called Denise and explained the situation. She expressed that she has been trained in rappelling and was eager to respond.”

“I really didn’t realize the enormity of the situation until I saw the photos afterwards,” she added.

Gove was able to rappel to the trapped pup, which had been clinging to the bush.

Animal Services reported that the puppy is doing just fine and is being looked after by a local San Diego stray animal care facility. If anyone is interested, the lucky dog will be put up for adoption this Friday.
