Obama Sends Troops To Syria; 2013 Flashback: No Boots On The Ground

Today, the White House announced troops will be deployed to Syria for the first time. Sent to advise and assist forces fighting ISIS/ISIL, Special Operations forces will be stationed in Kurdish controlled territory.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest defended the policy, "The President does expect that they can have an impact in intensifying our strategy for building the capacity of local forces inside of Syria for taking the fight on the ground to ISIL in their own country. That has been the core element of the military component of our strategy from the beginning: building the capacity of local forces on the ground."

But back in 2013, the Administration was adamant against being drawn into this conflict. Unwilling to enter into another war, after campaigning so hard against military intervention in Iraq, the President made it clear there would never be boots on the ground. Today though things have changed.
