In his “DECLARACIONES DEL PRESIDENTE SOBRE CAMBIOS EN LA POLÍTICA CON CUBA” (Declaration by the President on Policy Changes to Cuba) on WhiteHouse.gov, Pres. Obama praises Cuban illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. in “makeshift rafts” with “no more than a shirt and hope in their heart.”
Writing in Spanish about his new policy towards Cuba, Obama touts “the opening of the United States” – and declares that “We are all Americans.”
Is this the harbinger of another open border and a new executive amnesty for all Cuban "HOPEers?"
Here’s the text, in English and Spanish:
“Dear fellow citizens, the city of Miami is just 200 miles or less of Havana. A number of Cubans have gone to Miami, in aircrafts and makeshift rafts; some with no more than a shirt and with hope in their heart. Today, Miami, is often referred to as the capital of Latin America. But it is also a deeply American city; a place that reminds us that ideals are more important than the color of our skin or the circumstances of our birth; a demonstration of what Cubans can achieve (succeed), and the opening of the United States with our family in the south. We are all Americans.
“Change is hard, in our own lives and in the lives of nations. And change is even harder when we carry the weight of history on our shoulders. But today we're making these changes because it is the correct thing to do. Today, the United States chooses (to) rid itself of the shackles of the past in order to reach a better future for Cubans, Americans, for the entire hemisphere and the world.
“Thank You. May God bless you and may God bless the United States of America.”
Estimados conciudadanos, la ciudad de Miami se encuentra a solo 200 millas o menos de la Habana. Un sinnúmero de cubanos han ido a Miami, en aviones y balsas improvisadas; algunos sin más que una playera y con esperanza en su corazón. Hoy a menudo se le refiere a Miami como la capital de Latinoamérica. Pero también es una ciudad profundamente estadounidense; un lugar que nos recuerda que los ideales importan más que el color de nuestra piel, o las circunstancias de nuestro nacimiento; una demostración de lo que los cubanos pueden lograr, y la apertura de los Estados Unidos con nuestra familia con el sur. Todos somos americanos.
El cambio es duro, en nuestras propias vidas y en las vidas de las naciones. Y el cambio es aún más duro cuando llevamos el peso de la historia en nuestros hombros. Pero hoy estamos haciendo estos cambios porque es la cosa correcta que hay que hacer.
