A Muslim group in New York is requesting that the word “Islamic terrorists” be removed from a 9/11 memorial.
The Islamic Organization of the Southern Tier told KTRK-TV that the wording of the monument in Owego “could encourage hatred towards Muslims in the city, painting all Muslims with the same brush.”
The group asks that the monument’s description read simply “terrorists” or even “Al Qaeda terrorists.”
Donald Castellucci, town supervisor of Owego, wholeheartedly disagrees.
He told KTRK that the town of Owego “doesn’t whitewash things” and views the monument as accurate in its description.
“I don’t live in a politically-correct world,” he said. “I live in a historical fact world and terrorism — whether it’s American homegrown, Christianity, Islamic — you call it what it is."
The memorial text reads the following:
“On September 11, 2001 nineteen Islamic terrorists unsuspectedly boarded four airliners departing east coast airports to hijack the planes and carry out a series of coordinated attacks on the United States.
"This is a tribute to all the lives lost that day and to the heroic sacrifice of all who rushed to help."
