The latest spurious “hate crime” accusation came after an illegal immigrant murdered a Muslim teenager with a baseball bat last weekend.
In a viral news incident that was perfectly crafted for an “Islamophobia in the time of Trump” pitch, news sources reported 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen was killed while walking to a mosque for Ramadan services.
Shortly after the incident went viral because it involved a Muslim teenager being killed, BuzzFeed reported police claimed there was no evidence of the incident being a hate crime. However, that did not stop people from finding a way to claim the incident was a hate crime and find ways to blame President Trump.
The Daily Beast ran the headline, “Will Donald Trump Ever Be Interested In the Death of a Muslim?” leading with the story about Hassanen. In the article, author Dean Obeidallah asks, “Was the hijab-wearing Hassanen targeted for her faith?” and then immediately states, “The police stated Monday that as of now they are not investigating this as a hate crime.”
Despite outright admitting police were not investigating the incident as a hate crime and had no reason to suspect anti-Muslim hate was at play, Obeidallah claims in his piece, “Trump has put together the most anti-Muslim administration ever. To put it bluntly there is a direct line from the Trump White House to anti-Muslim hate.”
Al-Jazeera likewise admitted police were not investigating the crime as a hate crime before writing in bold print, “Surge in hate crimes,” and claiming, “Anti-Muslim hate crimes have surged in recent years.”
BET jumped in, writing, “Muslim teen Nabra Hassanen was brutally beaten to death and police aren't calling it a hate crime.”
The Cut blatantly ran the headline, “Don’t Tell Me Nabra Hassanen’s Murder Wasn’t a Hate Crime.”
As it turns out, it wasn’t a hate crime.
On Monday, NBC Washington reported police concluded Hassanen was not killed because she was a Muslim leaving a mosque. Rather, the police said it was because of 22-year-old illegal immigrant Darwin Martinez Torres’ road rage.
In a statement on Monday, police said, “This tragic case appears to be the result of a road rage incident involving the suspect, who was driving and who is now charged with murder, and a group of teenagers who was walking and riding bikes in and along a roadway," police said in a statement Monday afternoon.”
“Our investigation at this point in no way indicates the victim was targeted because of her race or religion," it continued.
Despite the police repeating again, “There is nothing at this point to indicate that this tragic case was a hate crime. No evidence has been recovered that showed this was a hate crime. Nothing indicates it was motivated by race or religion” after it was determined to be a road rage incident, people are still attempting to politicizing the tragedy.
Hassanen’s father disputed the idea that his daughter’s death was road rage, telling the Guardian, “He killed my daughter because she is Muslim. That’s what I believe. That’s what I told him [the detective.]”
He said he also told the detective, “I want to ask him one question. Why did he do that? Because he doesn’t like Muslims, or what?’ He tells me he has no answer for that. This answer is going to be in the court.”
Human rights lawyer Arjun Sethi tweeted out that Hassanen’s father’s statement, adding, “Hate is terrorizing our communities.”
Documentary filmmaker Jose Antonio Vargas responded to news about the illegal alien killing Hassanen by implying “we need more facts and context,” despite multiple statements from the police.
Of course, Trump will still be expected to issue a statement apologizing for yet another false hate crime.
