The United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) suffered its earliest World Cup exit after a first-round loss to Sweden earlier this month. Just several weeks later, the USWNT experienced another unfamiliar low as a result of this defeat.

FIFA recently released its newest world rankings, and the United States sat in the third spot, the lowest ranking in the 20-year history of this system. Sweden was ranked first, and tournament victors Spain were ranked second (why the champs wouldn’t be first is beyond me, but I digress).

The disappointing showing seemed inevitable, as former USWNT player Carli Lloyd predicted the squad was due for a time of reckoning.

“This was years in the making…you can’t stay complacent and not evolve, and that is exactly what has happened,” Lloyd said. “This is on the players, this is on coach Vlatko Andonovski, U.S. Soccer, that has contributed to this failure and this exit at the World Cup. The team was not prepared, and a lot of these younger players, we’re going to see a new era, and a lot of these younger players, I hope, will use this as a huge learning experience to get better in the future.”

Team co-captain Lindsey Horan also noted that the squad’s build-up to the tournament was less than stellar and contributed to the demise.

“We did not get the best out of every single individual. I don’t think everyone was fully prepared, and that’s on us as well,” Horan said.

The USWNT has long been a team of arrogant, America-hating individuals who apparently were too cocky to take this tournament seriously. As they look up at the rest of the field and consider their position, maybe they’ll finally realize that a lot of things need to change in their culture and attitudes for them to be on top of the world again.
