Web Searches for Libertarian Candidates Spike After Ted Cruz Drops Out

News of Ted Cruz dropping out of the Republican presidential race — and the realization that Donald Trump is now the presumptive Republican nominee — has led to an increase of interest in the Libertarian Party.

Reason reports Google Trends shows searches for "Libertarian Party" spiked around 8 p.m., when it was reported Cruz would be dropping out of the Republican race.

Cruz officially announced he was suspending his presidential campaign at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Interestingly enough, interest in the Libertarian Party appears to be highest in Indiana, where Trump won approximately 53 percent of the vote Tuesday night compared to Cruz’s 36 percent:

As Reason notes, a poll recently showed one in five Americans are open to voting for a third party.
