The House of Representatives created a special committee Wednesday to investigate Planned Parenthood's handling of fetal tissues and other abortion-related issues. Creation of the committee stems directly from the release of undercover videos involving the group.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) is expected to chair the committee and says that the panel is necessary in order to spark a "national conversation" about how Planned Parenthood operates, and to conduct a deeper investigation into the abortion provider's practice of selling fetal tissue and other baby organs.

"Our investigation has raised many more questions than we've been able to find answers," said Blackburn. “This is not simply an investigation of Planned Parenthood. This will be a broad-based, information-gathering, fact-finding mission to answer questions about how we treat and protect life in this country.”

House Democrats were almost unanimous in their opposition to the committees' creation, and it is unclear if they will even participate in the committee's hearings despite being allotted six seats on the panel.

Planned Parenthood was quick to object to the creation of the panel.

“It’s become very obvious that this is all part of a political agenda to make abortion illegal in this country,” Dawn Laguens, Planned Parenthood’s executive vice president, said in a statement. “Despite the clear political agenda behind these investigations, we continue to cooperate fully with all of them.”
