Hillary Rips Supreme Court's 2nd Amendment Ruling for Ruining Grocery Shopping

Speaking at a fundraiser at the home of convicted drug felon John Zaccaro, Democratic Party presidential candidate Hillary Clinton attacked the U.S. Supreme Court for its 2nd Amendment rulings, indicating that lax gun control has made shopping at grocery stores dangerous.

The Washington Free Beacon broke the story after obtaining a secretly-taped audio of her remarks made at Zaccaro's Greenwich Village Apartment on September 24th (embedded at the bottom of this post).

“I was proud when my husband took [the National Rifle Association] on, and we were able to ban assault weapons, but he had to put a sunset on so 10 years later. Of course [President George W.] Bush wouldn’t agree to reinstate them,” said Clinton.

“We’ve got to go after this,” Clinton continued. “And here again, the Supreme Court is wrong on the Second Amendment. And I am going to make that case every chance I get.”

While Clinton didn't mention which court case she was talking about, most probably, she was commenting on the 2008 decision regarding the District of Columbia v. Heller, which is considered a landmark (and most controversial) Second Amendment decision made by the Supreme Court. In the case, the court ruled a D.C. ban on handguns was unconstitutional, as was the District's law requiring all firearms including rifles and shotguns, be kept "unloaded and disassembled or bound by a trigger lock."

Interestingly, in December 2007 six months before the the court issued the District of Columbia v. Heller decision, she indicated confidence in the Supreme Court's judgment:

She continued her fundraiser speech with a rant against the NRA, painting a graphic picture of how the rulings have had a "despicable" effect on the experience of going to the grocery store:

“I’m going to speak out, I’m going to do everything I can to rally people against this pernicious, corrupting influence of the NRA and we’re going to do whatever we can,” she said.

Clinton argued that the NRA has “so intimidated elected members of Congress and other legislative bodies that these people are passing the most absurd laws.”

“The idea that you can have an open carry permit with an AK-47 over your shoulder walking up and down the aisles of a supermarket is just despicable,” she said.

While I have never observed someone with a permit carrying an AK-47 over their shoulders in a supermarket, a lawful person with a weapon cannot be as dangerous as a young kid in the sugared cereal aisle begging a parent to purchase every brand they've ever seen on TV.

The NRA responded to Clinton’s remarks in a statement to the Washington Free Beacon.

“Hillary Clinton just doesn’t get it,” said Chris Cox, the executive director of the NRA’s legislative division. “The NRA’s strength lies in our five million members and the tens of millions of voters who support the Second Amendment. A majority of Americans support this freedom, and the Supreme Court was absolutely right to hold that the Second Amendment guarantees the fundamental, individual right to keep and bear arms.”
