According to a new national poll, Democratic Party front-runner Hillary Clinton is leading several top Republican presidential candidates with the exception of one: Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

The top five Republican candidates -- including Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush, and Ben Carson -- trail Clinton by an average of less than two points, pointing toward a close race for the White House in 2016.

Public Policy Polling reports,

PPP's new national poll finds very close match ups for the general election for President, with Hillary Clinton leading the top 5 Republicans by an average of less than 2 points.

"The strongest Republican against Clinton, as we've found repeatedly in recent polling, is Marco Rubio. He's the only hopeful with a lead over Clinton at 44/43. Ben Carson also manages a tie at 45/45. Clinton's leads are 46/43 over both Ted Cruz and Donald Trump, and 44/39 over Jeb Bush.”

If the poll reveals anything of real significance, it's the tough road ahead for Clinton.

“Our polling -- both nationally and in swing states -- is pointing to a close general election for President next year,” says President of Public Policy Polling Dean Debnam in a release.

“A lot of Democrats assume that, if the Republicans nominate Cruz or Trump, it will be an easy victory, but they should be careful about overconfidence,” he cautions. “Hillary Clinton finds herself in a tight race even against that pair.”
